Here are a few other reasons why vitamin C can make a difference when it comes to your mental well-being...

  • Anxiety A 2015 Double-Blind, Randomized, Placebo-Controlled Trial looked at the Effects of Oral Vitamin C Supplementation on Anxiety in Students. It was concluded that vitamin C plays an important therapeutic role for anxiety, but also pointed to its use in the prevention and reduction of anxiety. This suggests that a diet rich in vitamin C may be an effective adjunct to medical and psychological treatment of anxiety and improvement of  academic performance.
  • Autism  Autism Canada reports that Vitamin C has been shown to have a calming effect on behavior in humans. In animals, stereotyped behavior, one of the characteristics of autism, was reduced by treatment with vitamin C. Scientists hypothesize that vitamin C has these effects because it affects the brain’s response to an important neurotransmitter, dopamine 6. Some researchers have also theorized that children with autism may have more trouble managing free radicals than other children. Because vitamin C is an antioxidant it has the ability to help protect the the brain and immune system from free radicals.
A double-blind experiment, showed that high doses of vitamin C in children with autism had significant positive effects on behavior, compared to their behavior scores when they were taking a placebo.
  • Alzheimer's Disease There is a growing body of evidence maintaining healthy vitamin C levels have a protective function against age-related cognitive decline and Alzheimer's disease.
